Work-life balance is a term that’s often thrown around a lot but what does it mean and is it achievable?

So firstly, what is the official definition of work-life balance:

‘The amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy.’

During and since the Covid pandemic hit us, we have been weighing up our lifestyles and reassessing what is important to us.  As such work-life balance is now much more front of mind and the desire to have more time with our families and lead a healthier lifestyle is high up in our priorities. As Australia offers this desirable lifestyle and a great work-life balance, there has been steep increase in GPs wanting to make the move.

The appeal to move to Australia is very popular with GPs based in the UK & Ireland.  A combination of wanting to leave their stressed-out jobs in the NHS, plus the appeal of a much warmer climate, whilst being able to secure high earnings, makes Australia an easy contender to choose.

Why does work-life balance matter so much for GPs?

When GPs feel stretched, tired and overworked, they’re more likely to feel frustrated and can be prone to relay this frustration towards patients, colleagues and their families.

Considering how important our GPs play a part in society, working under such stressed conditions increases the likelihood of mistakes so improving their work/life balance and alleviating the stress is imperative.

Why moving to Australia is so appealing for overseas GPs?

Healthier lifestyle, lots of sunshine, great locations to live, flexible working hours, good earnings…. the list goes on!

When all these factors are present in a GPs life, they’re more likely to feel that they’ve achieved work-life balance successfully.

Imagine being able to take a stroll along the beach or hit the surf before you even go into work. Or the appeal of heading straight after work to the local park to meet your family and have a BBQ in the warm sunshine. No more sitting in heavy traffic jams with the rain pelting down!
